My passion for learning and education has driven me to improve myself professionally and intellectually over the years. As an educator, I view language as an avenue to understanding society and the world around us. Language is more than a tool for communication, but rather a frame of reference for how the world is viewed and experienced.

Using differentiated instruction and through inculcating positive habits of mind, I believe learning can become intuitive and powerful. With a Master of Arts in the Teaching of English from Teachers College, Columbia University and my diverse skill set, I’m confident in the innovation I will bring into the classroom and the institutions I work for. I am always eager to collaborate and grow alongside with other professionals.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As an educator, I perceive education as a comprehensive platform designed to foster both the holistic and academic development of my students. My role extends beyond the traditional notion of knowledge transmission; instead, I endeavor to nurture an environment that cultivates students into reflective, open-minded, and empathetic individuals.

TESTIMONIALS

What They’re Saying

Christina plans her lessons sequentially, not only within the class, but within the wider curriculum, so while each lesson builds on previous learning, the course itself clearly leads to the course students will take next year. Instruction in her class is scaffolded and varied. She continues to read and study her profession and continually seek feedback as she implements new strategies. She is a valued member of the Upper School who has played a significant role in developing our English curriculum.

Susan Carley - Head of Upper School at BASIS International School, Guangzhou

Ms. Sum is one of the most impactful teachers I have had. She taught me for 9th grade Honors English and AP Seminar. In 9th grade, she truly challenged me to think critically about research and rhetoric. Her personal attention to each student has made me a drastically better writer. Ms. Sum's approachable personality helps her establish meaningful connections beyond the classroom with her students. I am truly thankful for her mentorship in the past two years.

Eric Chen - AP Seminar

Ms. Sum is not only a teacher but a mentor as well. She has helped me grow as a person, something I am extremely grateful for. I appreciate her honesty and her approachability. I always appreciate the debates and arguments that we have in and out of class. In our conversations, she helped me realize that I enjoy writing and English as a subject.

My passion for photography started a few years ago when I picked up a camera and decided to photograph the moments and people around me. Over the last few years, I have learned to use photography as a way to express my creativity. I believe photography is about bridging humanity and communicating using light and darkness.

TRAVEL

As an undergraduate student, I attended a university with students from seventy different countries. That was when my fascination for cultures began and led me to cultivate a passion for travel. Through my travels and sojourn in various cities around the world, I have learnt to challenge myself through expanding my own understanding of cultures and societies.
